If you think using a remanufactured or refilled toner cartridge is greener than using a new Original cartridge, think again! You are probably doing more harm than good.
To start, let’s put things in to perspective. No individual and no organisation can claim to be truly environmentally friendly. We all ‘consume’.
However, by consuming less than we need to there are ways that we can reduce and minimise negative environmental impact. OKI Printing Solutions – along with other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the printing industry – has made considerable investment towards this. Furthermore, OKI is totally open and transparent about its environmental challenges and achievements.
This is not always the case with remanufacturers of toner cartridges. On the surface, they claim that as their cartridges are ‘remanufactured’ then these are more environmentally friendly than a newly manufactured cartridge from OKI Printing Solutions.
If you look at the big picture, you’ll see that this is not necessarily so – take a look at the following statements sampled from OKI’s recent document ‘Environmental Advantages of OKI Original Cartridges over Remanufactured Cartridges’.
A SUPPLIER THAT TAKES ITS RESPONSIBILITIES SERIOUSLY
OKI Printing Solutions has its
own state-of-the-art cartridge assembly plant at Cumbernauld
in Scotland. With its stringent compliance to all local and European health, safety and environment legislation, the facility serves as the hub for supplying consumables to
OKI Printing Solutions customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). |
Many remanufacturers source
their product from the Far East
and consequently have no
direct control over the amount
and standard of transportation
used to move it around from broker to broker and continent
to continent. Inevitably, the excessive transportation from such remote locations and from one company to another has a negative environmental impact. |
Do you know where your remanufactured cartridges come from and how many
ozone depleting pollutants have been emitted to atmosphere during their transportation? |
DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE
We know of no scientific evidence to support the notion that remanufactured cartridges are better for the environment
than newly manufactured when considering all impacting factors. For EMEA, each OKI
Printing Solutions toner
cartridge is newly manufactured and its carbon footprint can be accounted for. |
A “remanufactured” cartridge might have a plausible environmental ring to its name,
but few remanufacturers are transparent or offer public
reporting about their environmental management systems and environmental performance. |
Can your remanufacturer tell you the true carbon footprint of their cartridges? |
