Epson’s New iApp Enhances Mobile Printing



Epson America and Thinxtream technologies today announced a new mobile printing application—PrintJinni for Epson—that allows Apple iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users to print Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, and JPEG files from an e-mail account to any WiFi-enabled Epson MFP.

According to Epson, PrintJinni lets users download, display, preview, and print e-mail attachments that maintain accurate formatting. The app is considerably more feature-rich than the basic Epson iPrint app that the company launched in late 2009.

PrintJinni’s features include support for printing of Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents (Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007), as well as JPEG and PDF files from e-mail attachments; discovery of supported Epson printers and all-in-ones over the Wi-Fi network; and simple set-up and e-mail attachment support for Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, Apple MobileMe, AOL, and other IMAP-based email accounts. PrintJinni prints over Wi-Fi without the need for an intermediate PC, additional software or printer drivers; delivers secure encrypted communication for mobile printing; receives and prints iWorks documents from the iPad; and includes a free upgrade to iPad-native printing support

iOS 4.2 Brings Printing to iPad

Apple mentioned iOS 4.2 today for the iPad. One of the new features that has been requested a fair bit is printing. iOS 4.2 brings printing to the iPad. The new operating system is due to be launched in November.

To print you open up a program like Pages, click the menu at the top and the option to print will be available. When you click print you then can select which printer you want to send the job to along with how many copies you want printing.

Down in the multitasking dock is an icon that shows how many print jobs you have pending. When clicked on, a window slides up where you can look at the various print jobs pending. At this point you can cancel print jobs if needed.

As for how it prints, it wasn’t made too clear in the presentation although when selecting a printer, two wireless printers and a MacBook Pro printer was spotted, so we guess it prints over WiFi direct to a wireless printer, or direct to a laptop/computer connected up to a printer. Hopefully documents can print without docking the iPad.

Samsung’s Lee Shifts Strategy in Challenge to Apple



Samsung Electronics is no longer a copycat appliance manufacturer. It’s a consumer electronics behemoth, writes Yoolim Lee, that is the world’s largest maker of flat-panel TVs, color laser printers that scan, fax and copy, liquid-crystal-display TVs and computer monitors. It’s also No. 2 in mobile phones, with 22% global share, up from 14.4% in 2007.
“The global list of top companies is being replaced by the likes of Apple, Google and Facebook,” Choi Gee Sung, 59, tells Lee in his first interview since becoming CEO in December. “Our job is to prepare the organization for the next generation so it can continue to evolve into a truly great company.” That would include products like a robot maid that wowed at least one analyst.

But getting there admittedly means shifting strategy in its 67 units from a top-down management approach to a culture where creativity can flourish, as it does at, say, Apple. “In 10 years, the majority of products that represent Samsung may no longer exist,” says Lee Kun Hee, son of the founder of Samsung Group and chairman of the electronics unit. “We must have a new start. There is no time to hesitate.”

Canon launches new MFPs for home and office



The Pixma MX870 supports duplex scanning and printing

Pixma models have Wi-Fi and improved print and copy speeds

Canon has announced three new all-in-one printers designed for small or home office environments, boasting improved print and copy speeds plus Wi-Fi connectivity.

Available from March, the Pixma MX870, MX350 and MX340 are designed to be shared among a number of users for printing, faxing, scanning and copying.

All three have built-in Wi-Fi, which means that one of the multi-function devices can be accessed by a number of PCs, and users can print and scan wirelessly, Canon said.

Both the MX870 and MX350 have an Ethernet port in addition to Wi-Fi, plus a large 6.2cm TFT display for a clearer view of images and menus, while all three have a new and improved user interface.

Quick Start technology means that the new Pixma models can be used almost as soon as the power is switched on. A fully integrated auto document feeder enables users to scan, copy and fax documents quickly, and the MX870 additionally supports automatic duplex (two-sided) scanning and copying.

The MX350 and MX340 print at resolutions up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi, while the MX870 supports a higher resolution of 9,600 x 2,400 dpi.

As the new models are also aimed at the home, all three can print photos directly from Bluetooth and PictBridge compatible devices, as well as from the Apple iPhone.

Users can now print photos directly from their iPhone or iPod touch with a new free, easy-to-use iPrint photo printing app from Epson. The iPrint app was developed by Epson and allows users to print wirelessly to most Epson Ethernet and Wi-Fi enabled printers including the Epson Stylus Photo range and Epson Stylus Office range. The Epson iPrint app is a great enhancement for printing any photo from an iPhone or iPod touch.
“Epson is providing users with a convenient way to print high-quality photos directly to their Epson printer using the Epson iPrint app,” said Kevin Toes, Senior Product Manager, Consumer Inkjet, Epson Europe, “The Epson iPrint app gives iPhone and iPod touch users greater flexibility by allowing them to print on a variety of photo paper sizes and A4 paper.”
The Epson iPrint app is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or via itunes and available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Portugese.
