HP to Bring WebOS to Slate, Printers

HP to Bring WebOS to Slate, Printers

HP officially announced this at the company’s second-quarter 2010 earnings conference call

HP has officially announced its plans for Palm’s WebOS. HP CEO Mark Hurd revealed this juicy detail at the company’s second-quarter 2010 earnings conference call. Hurd told analysts that the WebOS would hit in form factors such as Slates and web-connected devices. Hence, the buzz we’ve heard about the upcoming HP tablet internally dubbed as Hurricane is true.

HP has recently acquired Palm and the transaction is set to close on July 31. Obviously, HP would be making best of Palm’s WebOS and would be investing in the research and development of the same. At the recent conference call, Hurd told the analysts that “after closing the acquisition we expect to leverage webOS in the app store beyond Smartphones in the form factor such as slates and web connected printers”.

HP already has Photosmart Premium printer sporting TouchSmart Web printer features and a 4.33-inch touchscreen. We suppose more such printers with WebOS loaded on them can be expected.

    Printerland Rugby Tour

    The Printerland Rugby Team

A different cry was heard around the ‘terrain’ at the annual veterans rugby tour held at Saint Savin near Lyon, France.

The usual cry was for ‘allez les bleus’ or ‘allez les rose’ but supporters of the Printerland rugby team had to cry ‘Allez les bleus, jaunes, magenta, noirs’….

The kit designed by staff at Printerland.co.uk was a massive hit as most French rugby clubs have copied the playing shirts of ‘Stade-Francais’ and gone for the, once original, pink look.

Commenting on the design Graham Vickers said ‘we based it upon the logo of Printerland and the colours cyan, magenta, yellow and black from which any colour can be mixed and in-turn printed. On the reverse we had the letters Printerland.co.uk plus some spares. It was quite funny to see a player with just a full-stop on his back and I’m sure this must be a first. We shall raffle the shirts at the players dinner and donate the proceeds to charity’.

The Printerland.co.uk rugby team was made up of veterans of Wilmslow and Altrincham Kersal rugby teams and finished fourth overall in the tournament and won the fair-play trophy.

Eco Printer Uses Ground Coffee For Ink

There exists a seemingly endless list of inventions meant to replace the normal ink cartridges found in printers with eco friendly alternatives. For example: the printer that runs using pencil stubs or the printer that erases (thanks to special ink) and reuses the same sheet of paper up to 1000 times. You might ask how mainstream producers such as Canon would react if one of these inventions actually saw widespread release. Would they dismiss out of hand the pencil stub printer? Or release a competing line of pencils (boasting different grades to change the printout quality)? That I suppose would depend on the public reaction.

Anyway the newest conceptual printer doing the rounds replaces everyday ink cartridges with coffee grounds. Named the RITI Printer and designed by Jeon Hwan Ju, he intends that you literally take the filtered dregs of your morning coffee and feed them into your printer. Moreover Hwan Ju is convinced for some reason that printing is too much a spectator sport: he hence requires the user to move the coffee cartridge back and forth repeatedly until the printout is completed. On the plus side this reduces your electricity bill. On the negative side this both makes large quantities of printing impossible and augurs the creation of a new type of repetitive stress injury.

Three steal a lead on MPS vendors

IDC analysis shows three brands out in front of vendor managed print services offerings

Managed print services (MPS) programmes from the likes of HP, Xerox and Ricoh may pull ahead of rival schemes, according to a global study of the emerging market.

IDC’s MarketScape: Worldwide Managed Print Services 2010 Hardcopy Vendor Analysis singled out Xerox, HP and Ricoh/IKON as leaders in MPS, due to their robust, scalable portfolios and well-defined go-to-market strategies for growth.

Michael Orasin, hardcopy software and services research manager at IDC, said the growth of print services will continue to escalate as companies realise the potential cost savings.

“MPS is a game-changing trend that will have a significant impact on the hardcopy market well into the future,” Orasin said.

“Most vendors are either investing in services they have had for several years or, seeing the adoption trend, initiating competitive programmes to stay relevant.”

IDC said HP stood out for its manageable hardware and outsourcing capabilities, and Xerox for its extensive and adaptable delivery infrastructure and integrated suite. Ricoh/IKON was praised for its deep expertise in managed services.

Andy Jones, services head at Xerox, said: “Our MPS does what it says on the tin. This is a delivery game, not a game of hardware features and functions. It provides our customers with maximum availability and usage for minimal cost.”

IDC said MPS offerings consistent across enterprise and SMB customers, with an ability to harness cloud computing, will excel.

There will be a growing need for vendors that offer proactive monitoring and support for heterogeneous environments, financing and integrated billing or dispatch, and for vendors able to reduce delivery costs and expand beyond fleet management and optimisation.
