Within weeks of debuting the world’s first high-speed solid ink Xerox multifunction printer in the Islands, Xerox Hawaii reports the demand for this revolutionary machine has surpassed the company’s expectations. The Xerox ColorQube 9200 Series multifunction printer cuts the cost of color pages by up to 62 percent compared to traditional color lasers without compromising print quality.
In addition to lower printing costs, ColorQube’s cartridge-free design generates 90 percent less supplies waste and reduces the effects of manufacturing and transportation on the environment. A study reviewed by the Rochester Institute of Technology estimated the ColorQube series uses 9 percent less lifecycle energy and produces 10 percent fewer greenhouse gases than a comparable laser device.
“In Hawaii, the demand for ColorQube has been phenomenal,” commented Glenn Sexton, vice president and general manager of Xerox Hawaii. “Within the first week of introducing ColorQube to our Hawaii customers, we bypassed our sales goals by more than 100 percent. Customers have been asking for a machine that’s not only environmentally friendly, but helps decrease overhead costs. ColorQube clearly is the answer.”
At the heart of ColorQube is a print head that increases ink flow 400 percent by packing in 880 microscopic nozzles twice the number per linear inch as compared to prior print heads. Development of these minuscule nozzles (each is half the width of a human hair!) is considered a major achievement because they deliver higher flow rates despite their reduced size.
The print head is about the size of a deck of cards and funnels molten solid ink through a complex network of channels to the nozzles, enabling color printing at up to 85 pages per minute. There are four print heads per printer, totaling more than 3,500 ink nozzles.
The ink is solid at room temperature and comes in the form of non-toxic, crayon-like ink sticks. It is melted inside the printer and loaded into the print head in liquid form. This simple, highly reliable process does not use cartridges to hold the ink, reducing supplies waste substantially and delivering the environmental benefits customers have asked for. With the new Xerox ColorQube, printing a page with a bit of color costs no more than printing in black and white.
As with Xerox’s other multifunction systems, the ColorQube prints, scans, and copies simultaneously. It also offers enough solid ink to print up to 55,500 pages before refilling. When a refill is required, the drop-in sticks can be easily loaded while the ColorQube is printing, eliminating any downtime. It comes equipped with a touch screen display, a power-saving mode that is tailored to a customer’s usage, color-enhancing technologies, and advanced security features.
“Xerox’s solid ink technology has been used in our desktop printers for more than a decade,” added Sexton. “It’s taken ten years and millions of dollars in research and development to create a printing technology that is very timely for today’s office. Going green, saving money and making color printing just as affordable as black and white is what customers have been looking for.”
