Printerland Helps Lone-Sailor

June 24th, 2009 Posted in General, Industry News, Printerland

his week Printerland provided satellite phone services for single-handed Sailor Adam Slade as he attempted to cross Biscay from Belle-Isle, Northern France to Baiona in Northern Spain.

Why Alone?

Adam spent the first several years of his life in Great Ormond Street Hospital undergoing countless operations and… well this is what the Doctors said.

” He was born prematurely and soon after birth was noted to have problems with control of his lower limbs. In essence a partial paralysis of his legs was apparent, but the exact cause of this problem was unclear. It was felt that there was possibly damage to the spinal cord at or around the time of birth. In his childhood he underwent multiple operations on his feet and on his hip in order to control their position and development. He lacked control of his foot and ankle regions. He used ‘irons’ or ‘calipers’ to assist him to walk.”

Three decades later Adam is facing grueling challenges to ‘pay-back’ the hospital and his journey is a pilgrimage to the dedication of the staff that nursed him through those early years of his life.

As any sailor knows Biscay can be cruel and to do this leg alone is very difficult. The ability to contact emergency services, offshore, could be vital and all of us at Printerland hope that Adam will never need to use this facility.
